A little time in the Sprinkler
Monday night I was having to water a patch of our lawn that was turning brown in the 96° heat and asked the boys if they wanted to play in the sprinkler.
Sure! Yeah!
After dinner, and after having let our dinner settle a bit, they put on their bathing suits and went out and played in the sprinkler. They laughed, giggled, chased each other. They ran their hands over the jets of water. They just had a great time.
Then it hit me.
My brother and I 30+ years ago used to do the same thing. We loved to play in the sprinkler. We would laugh, giggle, chase each other, and play in the water jets too. How could my kids, who are used to videos, the internet, video games, etc., find so much satisfaction is something so simple.
Because they are kids. Kids are simple. They can make a game out of anything and everything. Where two or more kids are gathered together, someone will make a game with at least one rule and the fun ensues. Kids don't need expensive things to have fun. They can be content with very little as long as they have someone to share that little bit with.
"But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that." (1 Tim. 6:8)
Maybe we don't need all the things we think we need. What if we just learned to have fun with what we have? What if instead of seeking more stuff we just learned to be content? What if we simplified our lives and freed ourselves from our lust for stuff?
What if?
